Camera predictions for 2013

2012 has seen the launch of the next generation of both professional photojournalism cameras (Nikon D4, Canon 1D X) and prosumer allround cameras (Nikon D800, Canon 5D Mark III, Sony A99) as well as the introduction of the first full frame enthusiast cameras (Nikon D600, Canon 6D). We do not expect this year to be equally busy, but the refresh of the professional high resolution studio cameras (Nikon D4x, Canon 1D S) will certainly provide some excitement and insight into things to come in sensor technology. Other interesting cameras coming in 2013 are the new top-of-the-line APS-C cameras (Nikon D7100, Canon 70D), replacing the Nikon D300s and D7000 and the Canon 60D and 7D respectively. As for entry-level cameras, the Canon 700D is the only DSLR we're reasonably certain that it will be launched this year. We expect Sony to give up on mirrors entirely (with maybe one or two last APS-C SLT cameras being launched in 2013) and concentrate on NEX and possibly a new line of mirrorless A-mount cameras, but the latter will probably have to wait until 2014. We don't expect any significant launches in the enthusiast category. The prosumer category might be good for some surprises. A 24MP high frame rate Nikon D800 variant (D800S?) and a high resolution version of the Canon 5D Mark III (3D?) would be welcomed by many. A full frame camera by Pentax might also be on the cards.
